Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a rare neoplasm of uncertain etiology and histogensis. It is most often detected in subcutaneous tissue, on the tongue, skin, breast, and more rarely in the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus. The tumor
was
first described by Abrikossof in 1926.
The main histological characteristics of the tumor are large large polygonal cells containing numerous eosinophilic granules. There is no general consensus about treatment of these lesions.
A case of granular cell tumor of the esophagus, successfully treated by surgical enucleation, is described.
